Flock Theatre presents a celebration of Eugene O’Neill’s birthday on October 16th with an American Sign Language version of his one-woman show Before Breakfast at the Thames Club in New London, CT. The one act play is directed by Derron Wood and translated and performed by Dr. Alison Wetmur, featuring voiceover for hearing audiences. The production will feature a pre-show talk by O’Neill scholar and biographer Robert Dowling. A cash bar will be provided by the Thames Club before and after the performance.

Before Breakfast is a short one-act play that features a wife and husband in their small Greenwich Village apartment in the early 1900’s. The husband is never seen on stage as the wife harshly criticizes him for his laziness and infidelity while they suffer being able to afford food and rent. Flock’s production capitalizes on the visual expressiveness of ASL to give voice to a character who may have been societally voiceless, yet far from meek or passive. It also flips the convention of interpretation with voice over (performed by the actress) providing translation of the signing for those who do not speak it.
